Birahini Damyanti Katha Summary and Main Points

"Birahini" is one who is separated from her lover. The tale revolves around Damayanti, who dejected and lonely, roams through forests in search of her lost husband, King Nishadha Raj Nal.

On the way, Damayanti meets a serpent, Karkotak, who is up to no good. He swings her up onto his shoulders as though he’s helping her but in fact he’s about to assault her. Though at a disadvantage, Damayanti is calm and unafraid. She eventually manages to flee when Karkotak, drunk and slack, dozes off.

Eager to look for Nal, Damayanti continues to roam alone. She skirts danger zones such as snake nests and presses on convinced she will find her husband.

On her journey, she encounters an expedition of traveling merchants led by Sarthavah, a chief of nomadic traders. One of them talks about a place named Chedi, indicating Nal might be there. Hopeful, Damayanti joins them.

The group make a halt at Padmasaugandhik Lake, and they pass the night in the camp. Unfortunately the travelers were many times trampled by wild elephants that come to drink water in the night. Only a handful remain, of whom Damayanti is one.

Damayanti travels only with one other woman and finally arrives at Chedi. There, she’s taunted by children, who believe she’s mad on account of her ragged dress and silence.

Disguising herself, Damayanti agrees to serve as a maid to Sairandhri, the daughter of Sunanda in order to search for information about Nal.
