Unit 10: Career Opportunities Summary

The first chapter of Class 12 English talks about the practical aspect of life regarding the job interview, etc, whereas Chapter 10 Career Opportunities: Presenting Yourself is about how to present yourself in a job. The purpose of this chapter is to explain the need for cast writing correct CV act as keys that open the door to job and career opportunities.

A CV (Curriculum Vitae — or résumé in some countries) is a comprehensive record of your academic history, professional experience, skills, and accomplishments. According to the chapter, a good CV can get a person an opportunity for a job, promotion, scholarship, internship or research funding. But it also shows that one, generic resume doesn't cut it. It is strongly advised that the CV is designed according to the job specification and that irrelevant information is omitted.

There are two basic kinds of CVs that are explained:

  • Academic CV — Research, Teaching, Academic CV— which means different degrees, research, and other experiences. It is probably longer and utilized in the academic world.
  • Non-academic CV: More skills, experience and personality-based information geared toward the workplace It is typically brief and direct.

This section also introduces us to the concept of ‘staying CVs’ and ‘leaving CVs’. It is a heavy CV filled with administrative and teaching, everything that shows someone has been around the institution for a while. A departing curriculum vitae, on the other hand, emphasizes contributions to research and an eagerness to embrace new challenges.

The unit also sets out definitions of some employment-related terms, often going beyond CV writing, such as:

  • Internship
  • Volunteering
  • Career counseling
  • Apprenticeship
  • Minimum wage
  • Recruitment
  • Soft skills
  • Human capital

Together, these terms set students up for what they can expect to face in the world of work and real-life applications. The exercise section also includes a practical exercise on writing a job application letter and a CV, making the chapter even more valuable!

The comprehension and critical sections help students think further about who is a good candidate for a job. It means that confidence, effective communication, teamwork, leadership, and adaptability are equally important skills as compared to formal education and experience. Finally, the chapter also has a discussion on how an employer should look beyond the CV and make interviews or tests to assess true ability.

Conclusion

This chapter is particularly applicable for high schoolers that will be finding jobs or going to college. It provides students with the fundamental skills on how to present yourself, how to create an impressive CV, and most importantly, how to apply the job-related key terms. It simply instills confidence within and prepares one for future career challenges.
