Summary of Class 12 English Unit 9: Ecology and Environment

This chapter tells the true story of a woman named Julia Butterfly Hill. She climbed a redwood tree in California and stayed there for 738 days. The tree was called Luna. Loggers wanted to cut it down. Julia would not let them.

She lived through storms. She lived through frostbite. She lived alone, far above the ground, while the wind howled and the rain came down. Men threatened her. They tried to wear her down. But she did not come down. She stayed.

The tree stood tall, and so did she.

This chapter is not only about one woman. It is about forests, and how we destroy them. When we cut trees, we bring floods and mudslides. We ruin the earth. Julia showed what it means to fight back, not with guns, but with will.

The lesson asks us to think—about the planet, about what is right, and about what we leave behind. It asks us to act with care. To value nature. To live simply.

The unit also teaches words—words used in science and the earth. It teaches grammar. It asks students to write and think. It asks them to look at the world and choose what kind of people they want to be.

It is a quiet call. But strong. Like the wind through tall trees.
