Unit Title: War and Peace
Story: Train to Pakistan
Author: Khushwant Singh

Summary of Train to Pakistan (English Class 12)

Train to Pakistan : It is a historical short story based on partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. The story delves into themes of communal tensions, displacement, and the human cost of political turmoil. Iqbal is the story of an English speaking social worker who comes to a village right north of the new border. He crosses paths with Meet Singh, the village priest, and discovers Jugga, a thuggish man convicted of murder.

Jugga is a criminal by name, his face is following the same way but his deeds show in the opposite direction of his fathers—although a villain, he comes to his own villagers but in fact only at the expense of bringing them harm by protecting them from others। At the same time, Iqbal's identity and motives are already misperceived just for being fluent in English. He is referred to as "Babu Sahib" while being viewed with contempt and awe at the same time.

With the characters of Meet Singh, Jugga, and Hukum Chand, the author depicts a world where morality, survival, and self-interest exist in conflict. Such character contradictions—from a priest who will perjure himself—point to the ambiguity of truth and justice in a world of uncertainty.

Train to Pakistan is an insightful portrayal of emotions amidst war and displacement. The show delves into moral dilemmas, themes of identity, justice, and the response of the average Joe within an unprecedented situation. Language, grammar, and writing are all bolstered, and students are prepared to analyze issues in society with a critical lens. This is a very good story.
